Manel Roura (DENSO and BESST vice chair) - West Midlands Green Leader

Manel Roura was listed as one of Sustainability West Midlands' Green Leaders for 2011. As the Environmental Officer at DENSO, Manel is responsible the environmental performance of the Telford site. His most notable achievements are the development of the eco-garden, zero-waste to landfill and implementing resource efficiency measures.

 

 

Paul Moran (Harper Adams) – Energy Institute’sEnvironment and Energy Awards 2011 - Energy Manager of the Year
Paul Moran, Estates and Facilities Manager at Harper Adams University College, has been crowned Energy Manager of the Year at the Energy Institute’s Environment and Energy Awards 2011.
Paul, 39, was among six people to reach the finals and beat off competition from Marks & Spencer, Asda, The University of Leicester, Knauf Insulation and Schneider Electrics Ltd.
Paul, who has been the Estates and Facilities Manager at Harper Adams in Shropshire since 2003, said: “To receive this award against such stiff competition is a real honour. I am proud of our achievements and pleased that the judges have recognised them in this award.”
The biggest project that Paul has worked on is the onsite anaerobic digester. Harper Adams has taken the lead on AD showing companies other options for energy reduction. This should offset the university’s emissions three times over.
 

Ricoh – Business Commitment to the Environment Awards - Management of Resource Efficiency Premier Award 2011

On Wednesday the 15th of June RPL’s Engineering Divisional Manager Colin Weaver travelled to London to receive one of the UK’s major environmental awards for Management of Resource Efficiency from Sir Stuart Rose.
The BCE awards are only given to those businesses that can actually demonstrate that they are making a real difference to their impact on the environment without affecting their ability to make a profit and develop the business for the future. Environment Officer Andy Whyle said “The path to sustainability is one that we cannot take alone, so I would like to thank everyone at RPL, especially volunteers and colleagues on the Environmental Action Committee who helped contribute to our Sustainability 2050 submission.” The 2050 plan has established integrated environmental targets of 30% by 2020 and 87% by 2050 compared to 2000. So far all targets have been met and there is a strong commitment to meeting the long-term targets.

 

Lyreco – Green Organisation - Green Apple award 2006 and 2009
The Green Apple Awards are run annually by the Green Organisation, they are an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
Lyreco were presented with the Gold level Green Apple award in 2009. The award was made to Lyreco by the Chartered Institute of Waste Management for the Stamp Out Waste Project which began in 2007.
In 2006 they won the Gold level Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice in Fuel, Power & Energy.
 

Best Western Valley Hotel - Green Business Tourism Scheme – Gold award
The Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge is the first hotel in Shropshire to be awarded the coveted Gold award, under the Green Tourism Business Scheme, for demonstrating excellence in environmental practice. The GTBS is the leading sustainable tourism certification scheme in the UK. Businesses are assessed against a strict set of criteria, including rigorous assessment of energy and water efficiency and waste management.
In order to qualify for this rating, the hotel had to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, managing waste and energy consumption, reducing its carbon footprint and promoting an awareness of the environment and the community, through staff training.
Joanne Boddison, General Manager said “Our in-house Green Team has been the driving force behind achieving our gold status, and we are very proud of what we have achieved.”
 

Epwin - National Recycling Awards – Best Recycled product 2009
The Epwin group won the award for their energy efficient PVC-U window. Manufactured from window profile made from 100 per cent recycled PVC-U, the pioneering energy efficient windows were installed in a pilot project in Manchester in 2009. The recycled profile was extruded by Profile 22 part of the Epwin Group. It was manufactured by Wrekin Windows and foiled with a thin virgin skin (2%) by Foilex, both in the Epwin group. The product has a total recycled content of 98% delivering an advanced thermal performance.
Jim Rawson, chairman, the Epwin Group said: “To win the Best Recycled Product Award 2009 against some very stiff competition from a wide range of sectors, is a fantastic achievement and shows just how far we, not only as a Group but as an industry, have moved forward.
