Carbon Monitoring - Waste

The table on the left is the one used for calculations. The one on the right shows the emissions factors that have been used for each waste stream and each disposal method.
Using the blue cells input the amount in tonnes of waste in the appropriate category for how it was treated.

The yellow column (tonnes of waste produced) on the left will then add up the total of that particular waste stream that has been produced.
Reading across the table shows the emissions per waste stream. Looking down the columns shows the emissions by waste disposal method. The cells that are grey are to indicate that a waste stream cannot be disposed of in a particular way.

The first yellow column on the table calculates the total waste by type, this is then used to calculate the emissions associated with the production of the original materials. Emissions from extraction, primary processing, manufacturing and transportation are included. The use phase is excluded. Quantifying both material use and emissions from waste management means that the benefits of waste prevention and more effective management will be covered.

This table can also be used to compare the emissions that would be generated from the disposal of the same waste by different methods. For example recycling versus landfill, the benefit is the difference between the 2 columns.

The emissions from waste are life-cycle emissions and only fall into scope 3 and should not be directly compared to scope 1 and 2. The figures used in this table are estimates only and should be used if you don't have any more specific figures. Exact emissions figures can be added at the top of the table.

The waste production figure for textiles currently does not account for the split of material types on the UK market. There will be improvements to this data at some point in the future.

Savings from embodied fossil energy resulting from avoiding waste are the negative of these figures.

These figures should be used for site-based reporting only, they should not be used for supply chain calculations or this will lead to double counting of emissions
