It is easiest to decide whether to enter your transport data by fuel or distance travelled. If you have data in both sections then it is fine to enter data in both sections, just make sure that the same information is not counted twice.
Emissions by fuel
The most accurate way of measuring this in terms of getting the emissions reported correct, is to enter data as litres of fuel. This information should be easy to find if fuel cards are used and invoices kept. However whilst being accurate in terms of emissions released this gives no indication of how many miles are being driven in inefficient vehicles and therefore gives no idea of how to go about reducing emissions from transport.
If emissions from transport form a high proportion of the company carbon footprint then it is a good idea to work out emissions from each type of vehicle. To do this enter the data by fuel type in the main spreadsheet. Then save another copy of the spreadsheet and enter the data by vehicle type to achieve a better picture of where emissions are being produced.
Petrol/Diesel - from 2011-12 onwards use biofuel blend filling station for all fuel purchased at a filling station. This is because biofuel is automatically added all fuel at filling stations and this means there is a slight reduction in the emissions. If you are purchasing fuel that you know has not been blended with biofuels then use the 100% mineral pure option.
Emissions by distance travelled
All distance data must be entered in km. If all your data is in miles then there is a mile to km converter on this tab. Add up totals for each vehicle type in miles and then convert to km.
The more information that is known about the vehicles means that the data entered will be more accurate and so will the results.
In the HGV and van freight section there are options for the % weight laden, if this information is not known then please use the average UK load option.
