Carbon Monitoring Tool

Introduction

The BESST carbon monitoring tool aims to assist organisations in reducing their contribution to climate change. The direct benefit of understanding emissions is lower energy and resource costs.

The Carbon Monitoring Tool is a spreadsheet that calculates a company's Greenhouse Gas emissions or the 'Corporate Carbon Footprint.'  The tool measures emissions from fuel and energy consumed with additional options for adding data from waste and water. The diagram below shows the three scope model that Defra set out, the tool is based on this.

from: 'Guidance on how to measure and report your greenhouse gas emissions': Defra 2009

The spreadsheet has space for data from 2008 to 2014. The results are automatically generated in output tables and graphs.

Getting started...

Before starting using the carbon monitoring tool it is a good idea to get most of the information that you will need. Some company information is also needed so that a measure of intensity can be calculated allowing easier comparisons between companies and previous years.
